케임브릿지 사전은 'arid'를 "not interesting and showing no imagination(흥미롭지 않고 상상력을 보여 주지 않는)"이라고 정의했다.

"I found his writing extremely arid(내 생각에 그가 쓴 글은 지극히 무미건조하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'arid'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something such as a period of your life or an academic subject as arid, you mean that it has so little interest, excitement, or purpose that it makes you feel bored or unhappy(삶의 한 시기나 학과 같은 것을 arid라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 흥미나 신나는 일, 또는 목적이 거의 없어서 당신을 지루하거나 불행하게 만든다는 뜻이다)."

"She had given him the only joy his arid life had ever known(그녀는 그의 무미건조한 삶에 유일한 기쁨을 주었다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'arid'를 "with nothing new or interesting in it(새롭거나 흥미로운 것이 없는)"이라고 풀이했다.
