케임브릿지 사전은 'gaffe'를 "a remark or action that is a social mistake and not considered polite(사교적인 실수이며 예의 바르지 않다고 여겨지는 발언 또는 행동)"라고 정의했다.

"I made a real gaffe - I called his new wife "Judy", which is the name of his ex-wife(내가 진짜 실수했어. 그의 새 아내를 주디라고 불렀는데, 그건 전부인의 이름이거든)."

"You started eating before anyone else had been served? What a gaffe!(다른 사람들이 식사를 서빙받기 전에 먼저 먹기 시작했어? 그건 실수지!)" 

콜린스 사전은 'gaffe'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A gaffe is a stupid or careless mistake, for example when you say or do something that offends or upsets people(gaffe는 예를 들어 다른 사람들을 기분 상하게 하거나 화나게 하는 말 또는 행동 같은, 바보스럽거나 부주의한 실수이다)."
