케임브릿지 사전은 'anodyne'을 "intended to avoid causing offence or disagreement, especially by not expressing strong feelings or opinions(특히 강렬한 감정이나 의견을 표현하지 않음으로써 기분을 상하게 하거나 의견이 충돌하는 일을 피하기 위해 의도된)"라고 정의했다.

"This is daytime television at its most anodyne(이것은 가장 온건한 형태의 낮 시간 TV이다)."

"Somehow this avoids being just another silly pop song with anodyne lyrics about love and happiness(어떻게 해서인지 이것은 사랑과 행복에 대한 온건한 가사를 가진, 또 하나의 바보스러운 팝 송이 되기를 피한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'anodyne'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as anodyne, you are criticizing it because it has no strong characteristics and is not likely to excite, interest, or upset anyone(어떤 것을 anodyne이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 강렬한 특징이나 그 누구도 신나게 하거나, 흥미를 돋우거나, 화나게 하지 않을 것이기 때문에 그것을 비판하는 것이다)." 격식을 차렸으며, 못마땅해하는 뉘앙스가 담긴 표현이다.

"Their quarterly meetings were anodyne affairs(그들의 분기별 회의는 온건한 일이었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'anodyne'을 "​unlikely to offend anyone or cause them to disagree; not expressing strong opinions(아무도 기분 상하게 하거나 의견이 충돌하게 하지 않을 것 같은; 강한 의견을 표현하지 않는)"이라고 풀이했다.
