케임브릿지 사전은 'dregs'를 "the small solid pieces that sink to the bottom of some liquids, such as wine or coffee, that are not usually drunk(와인이나 커피 등 일부 액체의 바닥에 가라앉는, 대개 마시지 않는 작은 고체 조각들)"라고 정의했다.

"I wanted a last drink of coffee, but there were only dregs left(마지막으로 커피를 마시려 했으나 찌꺼기밖에 남지 않았다)."

"He emptied the dregs of his tea into the sink(그는 찻잎 찌꺼기를 싱크대에 비웠다)."

"She had drunk her coffee down to the dregs (= finished it)(그녀는 커피를 찌꺼기까지 마셔 버렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'dregs'를 이렇게 설명했다. "The dregs of a liquid are the last drops left at the bottom of a container, together with any solid bits that have sunk to the bottom(액체의 dregs는 바닥에 가라앉은 고체 조각들과 같이 용기의 바닥에 남는 마지막 부분이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'dregs'를 "the last drops of a liquid, mixed with little pieces of solid material that are left in the bottom of a container(용기의 바닥에 남는 고체 물질의 작은 조각들과 섞인, 액체의 마지막 소량)"라고 풀이했다.
