케임브릿지 사전은 'espouse'를 "to become involved with or support an activity or opinion(어떤 활동이나 의견에 관여하거나 지지하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Vegetarianism is one cause she does not espouse(채식주의는 그녀가 지지하지 않는 한 대의이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'espouse'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you espouse a particular policy, cause, or belief, you become very interested in it and give your support to it(특정한 정책, 대의, 또는 믿음을 espouse 한다면, 그것에 상당히 흥미를 가지고 지지하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린 표현이다.

"She ran away with him to Mexico and espoused the revolutionary cause(그녀는 그와 함께 멕시코로 도망가서 혁명의 대의를 지지했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 '​espouse'를 "to give your support to a belief, policy, etc.(믿음, 정책 등을 지지하다)"라고 풀이했다.
