[영어 공부] precarity(안정성이 없는 존재 상태)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'precarity'를 "the state of being uncertain or likely to get worse(불확실하거나 더 악화될 것 같은 상태)"라고 정의했다.

"The older brother raised the younger one, a responsibility that gave him a perpetual sense of life's precarity(형이 동생을 키웠는데, 그것이 그에게 끊임없이 삶이란 불안정하다는 느낌을 준 책임이었다)."

"Despite the looming precarity ahead, I’ve found my time at grad school to be quite rewarding(어렴풋이 보이는 미래의 벌안정함에도 불구하고 나는 대학교 시절이 꽤 보람 차다고 느꼈다)."

'precarity'의 근간이 되는 형용사는 'precarious'인데 콜린스 사전은 이를 이렇게 설명했다. "If your situation is precarious, you are not in complete control of events and might fail in what you are doing at any moment(상황이 precarious 하다면, 일어나는 사건들을 당신이 완전히 통제하고 있지 못하며, 당신이 하는 일이 언제라도 실패할 수 있는 것이다)."

"Our financial situation had become precarious(우리의 재정 상황은 불안정하다)." 

"...the Government's precarious position(...정부의 불안정한 위치)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'precarit'를 "the state of not being safe or certain(안전하거나 확실하지 못한 상태)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The precarity of the property market is very worrying for the economy(부동산 시장의 불안정성은 경제에 아주 염려가 되는 요인이다)."
