케임브릿지 사전은 'withering'을 이렇게 정의했다. "A withering look, remark, etc. is one that is intended to make someone feel ashamed(withering한 눈길이나 발언 등은 상대를 부끄럽게 만들도록 의도된 것이다)."

"He said that Lizzie had been drunk at the time and I saw her shoot him a withering glance(그는 리지가 당시 취해 있었다고 말했고, 나는 그녀가 그에게 무시무시한 눈빛을 보내는 걸 봤다)."
