케임브릿지 사전은 'retrofit'을 "to provide a machine with a part, or a place with equipment, that it did not originally have when it was built(기계에 원래 만들어질 때에는 없던 부품을 제공하거나, 장비를 설치하다)"라고 정의했다.

"A state program to retrofit engines with pollution controls has succeeded in reducing pollution from trains(엔진에 오염 통제 기관을 장착하는 주 프로그램은 기차로 인한 오염을 줄이는 데 성공했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'retrofit'을 이렇게 설명했다. "To retrofit a machine or a building means to put new parts or new equipment in it after it has been in use for some time, especially to improve its safety or make it work better(기계나 건물을 retrofit 한다는 것은 그것이 얼마간 사용된 후, 특히 그것의 안전성을 향상시키거나 더 잘 작동하도록 만들기 위해 새로운 부품이나 새로운 장비를 설치하는 것이다)."
