케임브릿지 사전은 'surreptitious'를 "done secretly, without anyone seeing or knowing(비밀스럽게, 다른 사람이 보거나 알지 못하는 채로 행해진)"이라고 정의했다.

"She seemed to be listening to what I was saying, but I couldn't help noticing her surreptitious glances at the clock(그녀는 내가 하는 말을 듣고 있는 것처럼 보였지만, 그녀가 슬쩍 시계를 보는 걸 알아차릴 수밖에 없었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'surreptitious'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A surreptitious action is done secretly(surreptitious한 행동은 비밀스럽게 행해지는 것이다)."

"He made a surreptitious entrance to the club through the little door in the brick wall(그는 벽돌 벽에 난 작은 문을 통해 클럽에 은밀하게 들어왔다)." 

"They had several surreptitious conversations(그들은 몇 번의 비밀스러운 대화를 나누었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'surreptitious'를 "in a quick or secret way so that other people do not notice(다른 이들이 눈치채지 못하게, 재빠르거나 비밀스럽게)"라고 풀이했다.
