케임브릿지 사전은 'knock-on effect'를 이렇게 정의했다. "When an event or situation has a knock-on effect, it causes other events or situations, but not directly(어떤 사건이나 상황이 knock-on effect가 있다면, 그것이 다른 사건들 또는 상황들을 유발하는데, 직접적이지 않게 그렇게 하는 것이다)"

"If one or two trains run late, it has a knock-on effect on the entire rail service(기차 한두 대가 늦으면, 기차 운행 서비스 전체에 연쇄 효과를 일으킨다)."

콜린스 사전은 'knock-on effect'를 "something that results inevitably but indirectly from another event or circumstance(필연적으로, 그러나 다른 사건이나 상황으로부터 간접적으로 발생하는 것)"라고 설명했다.
