[영어 공부] clapped out(낡아빠진)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'clapped out'을 이렇게 정의했다. "Clapped out machines are old and no longer work well(clapped out한 기계는 오래됐고 더 이상 잘 작동하지 않는 것이다)."

"She drives a clapped-out old Mini(그녀는 낡아빠진 미니를 몬다)."

콜린스 사전은 'claspped-out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe a person or a machine as clapped-out, you mean that they are old and no longer able to work properly(사람이나 기계를 clapped-out라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 오래됐고 더 이상 제대로 일하지/작동하지 못한다는 뜻이다)." 영국식이고 비격식적이며(informal), 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 표현이다.

"...his clapped-out old car(...그의 낡은 고물차)." 

"...clapped out comedians(...한물간 코미디언들)."

롱맨 사전은 'clapped out'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "a clapped-out car, machine etc is old and in very bad condition(clapped-out한 차, 기계 등은 오래되었으며 상태가 무척 안 좋은 것이다)"
