케임브릿지 사전은 'predation'을 "the fact that an animal hunts, kills, and eats other animals(한 동물이 다른 동물들을 사냥하고 죽여서 잡아먹는 것)"라고 정의했다.

"For local cattle ranchers, predation by mountain lions is a problem(지역의 소 목장 주인들에게 퓨마가 소를 포식하는 것은 문제다)."

콜린스 사전은 'predation'을 "a relationship between two species of animal in a community, in which one (the predator) hunts, kills, and eats the other (the prey)(한 지역에 있는 두 종(種)의 동물이, 포식자가 먹잇감을 사냥하고 죽여서 잡아먹는 관계)"라고 설명했다.
