케임브릿지 사전은 'stopgap'을 "something intended for temporary use until something better or more suitable can be found(더 낫거나 적절한 방법을 찾을 때까지 일시적으로 사용하기 위해 의도된 것)"라고 정의했다.

"Hostels are used as a stopgap until the families can find permanent accommodation(호스텔은 가족들이 영구적인 거처를 찾을 때까지 임시방편으로 이용된다)."

"We might have to employ someone temporarily as a stopgap measure until we can hire someone permanently(우리는 정규직을 고용할 때까지 임시방편으로 누군가를 고용해야 할지도 모른다)."

콜린스 사전은 'stopgap'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A stopgap is something that serves a purpose for a short time, but is replaced as soon as possible(stopgap은 짧은 기간 동안 도움이 되지만, 가능한 한 빨리 대체되는 것이다)."

"Gone are the days when work was just a stopgap between leaving school and getting married(일이 학교 졸업 후에서 결혼 전까지의 임시방편이던 시절은 지났다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'stopgap'을 "something that you use or do for a short time while you are looking for something better(더 나은 것을 찾는 동안, 짧은 기간 동안 사용하거나 하는 것)"라고 풀이했다.
