케임브릿지 사전은 'at one/this etc. remove'를 "separated from something such as an event by an amount of time, by your feelings, or by other events(시간의 흐름, 기분, 또는 다른 사건들 같은 것들로 인해 어떤 것과 분리된)"라고 정의했다.

"Charlotte felt she was at one remove from reality(샬롯은 현실에서 한 발자국 떨어져 있다고 느꼈다)."

"At this remove it is difficult to estimate what the total value of the estate was(이렇게 떨어져 있으니 그 사유지의 총 가치가 얼마인지 추측하기 어렵다)."

"This kind of artistic representation is at many removes from the subject(이런 종류의 예술적 표현은 주제에서 많이 떨어져 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'at one remove' 또는 'at several removes'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you do or experience something at one remove, you do not do it or experience it yourself, but someone else does it or experiences it instead of you(at one remove에 어떤 것을 하거나 경험한다면, 그것을 자신이 직접 하거나 경험하는 게 아니라, 다른 누구가 당신 대신 하거나 경험하는 것이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'remove'를 "an amount by which two things are separated(두 가지가 분리된 정도)"라고 풀이했다.
