케임브릿지 사전은 'transmute'를 "to change something completely, especially into something different and better(어떤 것을 완전히 바꾸다, 특히 다르고 더 좋은 것으로 그렇게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"A few centuries ago alchemists thought they could transmute lead into gold(몇 세기 전, 연금술사들은 납을 금으로 바꿀 수 있다고 생각했다)."

"Plutonium transmutes into/to uranium when it is processed in a nuclear reactor(플루토늄은 원자로에서 처리하면 우라늄으로 변한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'transmute'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something transmutes or is transmuted into a different form, it is changed into that form(어떤 것이 transmute 하거나 다른 형태로 transmute된다면, 그 형태로 변하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"She ceased to think, as anger transmuted into passion(그녀는 분노가 열정으로 변하자, 생각하기를 멈췄다)."

"Scientists transmuted matter into pure energy and exploded the first atomic bomb(과학자들은 물질을 순수한 에너지로 변화시켜서 최초의 원자 폭탄을 폭발시켰다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'transmute'를 "to change, or make something change, into something different(어떤 것을 다른 것으로 바꾸거나 바뀌게 하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"It was once thought that lead could be transmuted into gold(예전에는 납을 금으로 변화시킬 수 있다고 생각했다)."
