케임브릿지 사전은 'old hat'을 "not modern or exciting(현대적이거나 흥미진진하지 않은 것)"이라고 정의했다.

"He may be old hat among the trendy younger generation, but his shows draw more viewers than any other comedian(그는 트렌디한 젊은 세대 사이에서는 구식으로 여겨질지 모르지만, 그의 쇼는 어떤 다른 코미디언들보다 더 많은 시청자를 끌어모은다)."

콜린스 사전은 'old hat'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something or someone is old hat, you mean that they have existed or been known for a long time, and they have become uninteresting and boring(어떤 사물 또는 사람이 old hat이라고 한다면, 그들이 오랫동안 존재하거나 알려져 있었고, 흥미롭지 않고 지루해졌다는 뜻이다)."

"The song was probably old hat even then(그 노래는 심지어 아마 그때에도 한물 갔었다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'old hat'을 "something that is old-fashioned and no longer interesting(구식이고 더 이상 흥미롭지 않은)"이라고 풀이했다.
