케임브릿지 사전은 'fail-safe'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If something is fail-safe, it has been designed so that if one part of it does not work, the whole thing does not become dangerous(어떤 것이 fail-safe하다면, 한 부분이 작동하지 않으면 전체가 위험해지지 않도록 설계된 것이다)"

"a fail-safe device(안전장치가 되어 있는 기기)"

콜린스 사전은 'fail-safe'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Something that is fail-safe is designed or made in such a way that nothing dangerous can happen if a part of it goes wrong(fail-safe한 것은 일부가 잘못되더라도 위험한 일이 일어나지 않도록 설계된 것이다)."

"There was a fail-safe mechanism in place to override the controls in case of a malfunction(제대로 작동하지 않을 경우에 대비해 콘트롤을 중단할 수 있는 안전장치가 되어 있는 기계 장치가 있다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'fail-safe'를 "​(of machinery or equipment) designed to stop working if anything goes wrong((기계나 장비가) 어떤 것이 잘못되면 작동을 멈추도록 설계된)"이라고 풀이했다.
