케임브릿지 사전은 'latent'를 "present but needing particular conditions to become active, obvious, or completely developed(현재 존재하지만 활동적이 되거나 분명해지거나 완전히 발달하려면 특정한 조건이 필요한)"라고 정의했다.

"Recent developments in the area have brought latent ethnic tension out into the open(최근의 그 지역은 개발되었는데, 그 점이 잠재해 있던 인종적 갈등을 공공연하게 드러나게 만들었다)."

"We're trying to bring out the latent artistic talents that many people possess without realizing it(우리는 많은 이들이 알지 못한 채 가지고 있는 잠재적인 예술적 재능을 꺼내려고 노력합니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'latent'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Latent is used to describe something which is hidden and not obvious at the moment, but which may develop further in the future(latent는 숨겨져 있으며 지금 당장은 분명하지 않으나, 미래에 더 발달할 수 있는 것을 가리키기 위해 쓰인다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'latent'를 "​existing, but not yet clear, active or well developed(존재하지만 아직 확실하거나, 활동적이거나, 잘 발달하지는 않은)"라고 풀이했다.
