[영어 공부] by the look/looks of it(보아하니)

 

세상 만사가 겉보기와 속이 똑같을 수는 없지만, 그래도 우리가 사물을 판단하는 근거 중 제일 첫 번째는 그것이 어떻게 보이느냐 하는 것이다.

살면서 하루에 '보아하니 ~인 것 같다' 또는 '~해 보인다'라는 말도 한 번도 안 쓸 수 있을까? 아마 어려울 것이다.

우리가 자주 쓰는 표현 '보아하니'는 영어로 'by the look of it' 또는 'by the looks of it'이라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전을 보면 'by the looks of things' 항목에 이 표현은 'by the look of it'이라고도 쓴다고 알린 후 "judging by the information we have now(우리가 가진 정보로 판단하건대)"라고 뜻을 풀이했다.

"By the look of things, we won't finish till next week(보아하니, 다음주까지 일을 끝낼 수 없을 듯하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'by the look of/looks of it'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You use expressions such as by the look of him and by the looks of it when you want to indicate that you are giving an opinion based on the appearance of someone or something(람 또는 사물의 외양에 기반한 당신의 의견을 표현함을 나타내기를 원할 때 by the look of him 또는 by the looks of it 같은 표현을 사용한다)."

"He was not a well man by the look of him(보아하니 그는 건강이 양호한 사람 같지는 않다)."

"By the look of things, Mr Stone and company will stay busy(보아하니, 스톤 씨와 그 회사는 앞으로도 바쁠 것 같다)."

by the look/looks of it과 같은 의미로 from the look of things를 쓸 수도 있다.

메리암 웹스터 사전은 'from look of things'를 "judging by the way something looks or by circumstances relating to something(어떤 것의 외양 또는 무엇과 관련한 상황으로 판단하건대)"라고 정의했다.

"From the look of things, we won't be arriving on time(딱 보니까 제시간에 도착하기는 글렀다)."
