케임브릿지 사전은 'ascendancy'를 "a position of power, strength, or success(권력, 힘, 또는 성공을 가진 지위)"라고 정의했다.

"They are in danger of losing their political ascendancy (= controlling power)(그들은 자신의 정치적 지위를 잃을 위험에 처해 있다)."

"Supporters of the proposal are currently in the ascendancy over its opponents (= are more powerful than them)(그 제안을 지지하는 이들은 현재 그들의 맞수보다 더욱 높은 지위에 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ascendancy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If one group has ascendancy over another group, it has more power or influence than the other group." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"Although geographically linked, the two provinces have long fought for political ascendancy(지리학적으로 연결되어 있긴 하지만, 두 주(州)는 정치적 지위를 위해 오랫동안 싸워 왔다)."
