케임브릿지 사전은 'demur'를 "to express disagreement or refuse to do something(반대 의견을 표현하거나 어떤 것을 하기를 거부하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The lawyer requested a break in the court case, but the judge demurred(변호사는 법정 소송 사건에서 휴식을 요청했으나, 판사는 이를 거부했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'demur'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you demur, you say that you do not agree with something or will not do something that you have been asked to do(demur 한다면, 그것에 동의하지 않는다거나 당신이 하도록 요청된 것을 하지 않겠다고 말하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"Hunt asked me to take over the whole operation. At first I demurred(헌트는 내게 작전을 전부 인계받아 달라고 부탁했다. 나는 처음엔 거절했다)."

"The doctor demurred, but Piercey was insistent(의사는 거부했지만, 피어시는 계속 주장했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'demur'를 "to say that you do not agree with something or that you refuse to do something(어떤 것에 동의하지 않는다거나 어떤 것을 하기를 거부한다고 말하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"At first she demurred, but then finally agreed(처음에 그녀는 거부했으나, 그러다 결국 동의했다)."
