케임브릿지 사전은 'edge out'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone edges out someone else, they just manage to beat them or get in front of them in a game, race, or contest(어떤 사람이 다른 사람을 edge out 한다면, 전자가 후자를 이기거나, 게임, 경주, 또는 경쟁에서 그들보다 앞서는 것이다)."

"France edged out the British team by less than a second(프랑스는 영국 팀을 1초도 안 되는 차이로 제쳤다)."

"McGregor's effort was enough to edge Johnson out of the top spot(맥그리어의 노력은 존슨을 1위 자리에서 밀어내는 데 충분했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'edge out'을 "to defeat someone by a small amount(상대를 작은 차이로 이기다)"라고 설명했다.

"Italy edged out France by two points(이탈리는 프랑스를 2점 차이로 이겼다)."

롱맨 사전은 'edge somebody out'을 "to defeat or do better than someone or something else by a small amount(이기다 또는 어떤 사람이나 사물보다 작은 차이로 더 잘하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Among younger voters, he was edged out by the other candidate(젊은 유권자들 사이에서 그는 다른 후보에 의해 근소한 차이로 밀렸다)."

"She is a brilliant gymnast, but her rival edged her out(그는 뛰어난 체조 선수이지만, 그녀의 라이벌에 의해 밀려났다)."
