케임브릿지 사전은 'nominal'을 "in name or thought but not in fact or not as things really are(사실이나 실제로는 아니고, 이름이나 생각만으로만)"라고 정의했다.

"She's the nominal head of our college - the real work is done by her deputy(그녀는 우리 대학의 명목상 총장이다. 진짜 일은 그녀의 대행이 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'nominal'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You use nominal to indicate that someone or something is supposed to have a particular identity or status, but in reality does not have it(nominal은 사람이나 사물이 어떤 특정한 정체성이나 지위를 가져야 하지만, 실제로는 그것을 가지지 않았음을 나타내기 위해 쓴다)."
