케임브릿지 사전은 'topography'를 "the physical appearance of the natural features of an area of land, especially the shape of its surface(땅의 한 지역이 가진 자연적인 특징의 외적 형태, 특히 그 표면의 모양)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'topography'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Topography is the study and description of the physical features of an area, for example its hills, valleys, or rivers, or the representation of these features on maps(topography는 한 지역, 예를 들어 언덕, 계곡, 강, 또는 이러한 특징들이 지도에 나타난 묘사에 관한 연구와 기술이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'topography'를 "the physical features of an area of land, especially the position of its rivers, mountains, etc.; the study of these features(땅의 한 지역, 특히 강, 산 등의 위치가 가진 외적 형태; 이러한 특징의 연구)"라고 풀이했다.
