케임브릿지 사전은 'claptrap'을 "silly talk that means nothing and should not be believed(아무 의미도 없고 믿지 말아야 할 바보 같은 이야기)"라고 정의했다.

"Don't believe a word of what he says. It's just a load of claptrap(그가 하는 말은 한마디도 믿지 마. 그냥 다 헛소리야)."

콜린스 사전은 'claptrap'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something that someone says as claptrap, you mean that it is stupid or foolish although it may sound important(어떤 사람이 하는 말을 claptrap이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 중요하게 들릴지언정 멍청하거나 바보 같은 소리라는 뜻이다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 말이고, 못마땅해하는(disapproval]) 뉘앙스이다.

"This is the claptrap that politicians have peddled many times before(이것은 정치인이 이전에 많이 퍼뜨린 헛소리이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'claptrap'을 "​stupid talk that has no value(아무 가치가 없는 멍청한 소리)"라고 풀이했다.
