케임브릿지 사전은 'backslapping'을 "a noisy expression of happiness and positive feelings, usually showing admiration for a shared success(대개 같이 이룬 성공에 대한 감탄을 보여 주는, 행복과 금정적인 감정의 시끄러운 표현)"라고 정의했다.

"There was a party after the ceremony where much drinking and backslapping went on(시상식 후에는 술을 많이 마시고 시끌벅적하게 축하하는 파티가 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'back-slapping'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Back-slapping is noisy, cheerful behaviour which people use in order to show affection or appreciation to each other(back-slapping은 사람들이 서로에 대한 애정이나 감사를 보여 주기 위한, 시끄럽고 쾌활한 행동이다)."

"Men love him for his hearty back-slapping and hand-shaking(남자들은 그를 쾌활하고 시끌벅적한 칭찬과 악수 때문에 사랑했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'backslapping'을 "loud and enthusiastic behaviour when people are praising each other for something good they have done(상대가 한 좋은 일을 서로 칭찬하는, 시끄럽고 열렬한 행동)"이라고 풀이했다.
