케임브릿지 사전은 'ascetic'을 "avoiding physical pleasures and living a simple life, often for religious reasons(대개 종교적인 이유로, 육체적 즐거움을 피하고 단순한 삶을 사는)"라고 정의했다.

"They live a very ascetic life(그들은 아주 금욕적인 삶을 산다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ascetic'을 이렇게 설명했다. "An ascetic person has a way of life that is simple and strict, usually because of their religious beliefs(ascetic한 사람은 대개 종교적 믿음 때문에 단순하고 엄격한 삶의 방식을 가진 사람이다)."

"She has never been close to her ascetic, workaholic father(그녀는 금욕적인 워커홀릭 아버지와 가까웠던 적이 없다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'ascetic'을  "not allowing yourself physical pleasures, especially for religious reasons; related to a simple and strict way of living(특히 종교적 이유로 인해, 스스로에게 육체적 즐거움을 허용하지 않는; 단순하고 엄격한 삶의 방식과 관련된)"이라고 설명했다.
