케임브릿지 사전은 'scuttlebutt'을 "news or information that may or may not be true(사실일 수도, 사실이 아닐 수도 있는 소식 또는 정보)"라고 정의했다.

"Have you heard any scuttlebutt about the new boss?(새 상사에 대한 소식 뭐 들은 거 있어?)"

콜린스 사전은 'scuttlebutt'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Scuttlebutt is rumors or gossip(scuttlebutt은 소문 또는 가십이다)." 미국식이고(US), 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이다.

"Besides, he has no proof that the allegations are true; Washington is full of scuttlebutt(게다가, 그는 그 혐의가 진실이라는 증거가 없다. 워싱턴은 가십만 말할 뿐이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'scuttlebutt'을 "stories about other people’s private lives, that may be unkind or not true(다른 사람들의 사생활에 대한, 친절하지 않거나 진실이 아닐 수 있는 이야기들)"라고 풀이했다.
