케임브릿지 사전은 'put sth on the back burner'를 "to not deal with something now, but intend to deal with it at a later time(어떤 것을 지금 처리하지 않고, 나중에 그것을 처리하겠다고 의도하다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'backburner'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you put an issue on the back burner, you leave it in order to deal with it later because you now consider it to have become less urgent or important(어떤 이슈를 put on the backburner 한다면, 지금은 그것이 덜 급하거나 중요해졌다고 생각하기 때문에, 나중에 처리하려고 놔두는 것이다)."

"Many speculated that the U.S. would put the peace process on the back burner(많은 이들이 미국은 평화를 위한 절차를 일시 보류할 거라고 추측했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'back-burner'라는 동사를 "to leave an idea or a plan for a time, to be done or considered later(어떤 아이디어나 계획을, 나중에 하거나 고려하기 위해 놔두다)"라고 풀이했다.
