케임브릿지 사전은 'paper over something'을 "to hide an unpleasant situation, especially a problem or disagreement, in order to make people believe that it does not exist or is not serious(불쾌한 상황, 특히 문제나 다툼을, 사람들로 하여금 그것이 존재하지 않거나 심각하지 않다고 믿도록, 숨기다)"라고 정의했다.

"He tried to paper over the country's deep-seated problems(그는 그 나라의 고질적인 문제들을 가리려고 노력했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'paper over'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If people paper over a disagreement between them, they find a temporary solution to it in order to give the impression that things are going well(사람들이 그들 사이의 다툼을 paper over 한다면, 상황이 잘되어 가고 있다는 인상을 주기 위해 일시적인 해결책을 찾는 것이다 )."
