케임브릿지 사전은 'cordon off'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If people in authority, such as the police, cordon off a building or area, they put something around it in order to stop people from entering it(경찰처럼 권위를 가진 사람이 한 건물이나 지역을 cordon off 한다면, 사람들이 그곳에 들어가지 못하도록 그 주위에 무엇을 놓는 것이다)."

"They've cordoned off the whole area because of a suspected bomb(그들은 폭탄이 의심된다며, 그 지역 전체의 출입을 통제했다)."
