[영어 공부] scrappy(단편적인, 산만한, 지리멸렬한)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'scrappy'를 "untidy and not very attractive or well developed(단정치 못하고 매력적이거나 잘 발달되지 못한)"라고 정의했다.

"They live on a scrappy street in a poor part of town(그들은 이 동네의 가난한 지역에서 좋지 않은 길거리에 살았다)."

"a patch of scrappy bushes by the front door(현관 옆에 여기저기 자란 덤불)"

콜린스 사전은 'scrappy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as scrappy, you disapprove of it because it seems to be badly planned or untidy(어떤 것을 scrappy라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 잘 계획되지 못했거나 단정치 않기 때문에 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"...a scrappy affair(...앞뒤가 잘 안 맞는 일)."

"The final chapter is no more than a scrappy addition(그 마지막 장은 산만하게 덧붙여진 것 그 이상도 아니다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'scrappy'를 "consisting of individual sections, events, etc. that are not organized into a whole(전체적으로 정리되지 않은 개별적 부분들, 사건들 등으로 구성된)"이라고 풀이했다.
