케임브릿지 사전은 'sand'라는 동사를 "to make something smooth by rubbing it with something rough, especially sandpaper(거친 것, 특히 사포를 가지고 문지름으로써 부드럽게 만들다)"라고 정의했다.

"Sand the door (down) thoroughly before starting to paint(페인트칠을 시작하기 전에 문을 사포질해라)."

콜린스 사전은 'sand'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you sand a wood or metal surface, you rub sandpaper over it in order to make it smooth or clean(목재나 금속 표면을 sand 한다면, 그것을 부드럽거나 깨끗하게 만들기 위해 사포로 문지르는 것이다)."
