[영어 공부] gripe(불평을 해 대다, 투덜거리다)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'gripe'를 "to complain continuously about something in a way that is annoying(짜증 나게, 어떤 것에 대해 계속해서 불평하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"There's no point griping about the price of things(물건 가격에 대해 불평해 봤자 소용없다)."

콜린스 사전은 'gripe'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is griping, you mean they are annoying you because they keep on complaining about something(어떤 사람이 gripe 하고 있다고 말하면, 그들이 어떤 것에 대해 계속 불평하기 때문에 그들이 짜증 난다고 말하는 것이다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 표현이다.

"Why are football players griping when the average salary is half a million dollars?(풋볼 선수들은 왜 평균 연봉이 50만 달러인데도 불평하는 것인가?)"

"They were always griping about high prices(그들은 언제나 높은 가격에 대해 불평하고 있다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'gripe'를 "to complain about somebody/something in an annoying way(어떤 사람/사물에 대해 짜증 나게 불평하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"He's always griping about the people at work(그는 언제나 일터 사람들에 대해 불평한다)."

"Some members were griping about the new constitution(일부 회원들은 새 헌법에 대해 불평했다)."

"Throughout history, Americans have griped about taxes(역사 내내 미국인들은 세금에 대해 불평해 왔다)."
