케임브릿지 사전은 'happenstance'를 "chance or a chance situation, especially one producing a good result(우연 또는 우연한 상황, 특히 좋은 결과를 낳는 우연)"라고 정의했다.

"By (a strange) happenstance they were both in Paris at the same time(우연히 그들은 동시에 파리에 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'happenstance'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something happened by happenstance, you mean that it happened because of certain circumstances, although it was not planned by anyone(어떤 것이 by happenstance로 일어났다면, 그것이 어느 누구에 의해서도 계획되지 않았음에도) 불구하고 그것이 특정한 상황에 의해 일어났다는 뜻이다."
