케임브릿지 사전은 'lurid'를 "(especially of a description) shocking because involving violence, sex, or immoral activity((특히 묘사가) 폭력, 섹스, 또는 비도덕적인 행위를 포함하기 때문에 충격적인)"라고 정의했다.

"You can read all the lurid details of the affair in today's paper(그 사건의 충격적인 세부 사항들을 오늘의 신문에서 모두 읽어 볼 수 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'lurid'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is lurid, you are critical of it because it involves a lot of violence, sex, or shocking detail(어떤 것이 lurid라고 말한다면, 그것이 폭력, 섹스, 또는 충격적인 세부 사항을 많이 포함하기 때문에 비판적인 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스다.

"...lurid accounts of Claire's sexual exploits(...클레어의 성착취에 대한 충격적인 설명)."

"Some reports have contained lurid accounts of deaths and mutilations(일부 보고서는 사망과 훼손에 대한 끔찍한 설명을 포함하고 있다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'lurid'를 "​(especially of a story or piece of writing) presented in a way that is intended to shock((특히 이야기나 글이) 충격을 주기 위해 의도된 방식으로 묘사되는)"라고 풀이했다.
