케임브릿지 사전은 'expunge'를 "to rub off or remove information from a piece of writing(글에서 어떤 정보를 지우거나 제거하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"His name has been expunged from the list of members(그의 이름은 회원들 목록에서 삭제되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'expunge'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you expunge something, you get rid of it completely, because it causes problems or bad feelings(어떤 것을 expunge 한다면, 그것이 문제나 나쁜 기분을 유발하기 때문에, 그것을 완전히 제거하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
