케임브릿지 사전은 'emaciated'를 "very thin and weak, usually because of illness or extreme hunger(대개 병이나 극도의 배고픔으로 인해 아주 마르고 약한)"라고 정의했다.

"There were pictures of emaciated children on the cover of the magazine(그 잡지 표지에는 수척한 아이들의 사진들이 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'emaciated'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A person or animal that is emaciated is extremely thin and weak because of illness or lack of food(emaciated한 사람 또는 동물은 병이나 음식의 부족으로 인해 극도로 마르고 약한 것이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'emaciated'를 "​thin and weak, usually because of illness or lack of food(대개 병이나 음식의 부족으로 인해, 마르고 약한)"라고 풀이했다.
