케임브릿지 사전은 burn your boats/bridges'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you are in a situation and you burn your boats/bridges, you destroy all possible ways of going back to that situation(어떤 상황에서 burn your boats/bridges 한다면, 그 상황으로 돌아갈 수 있는 가능한 방법들을 모두 파괴하는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'burn your boats/bridges'를 "to do something which forces you to continue with a particular course of action, and makes it impossible for you to return to an earlier situation(당신으로 하여금 특정한 행동을 계속하게 강제하고, 그 이전 상황으로 돌아가기가 불가능하게 만드는 일을 하다)"이라고 설명했다.

"I didn't sell it because I didn't know how long I would be here. I didn't want to burn all my bridges(내가 얼마나 오랫동안 여기 있을지 몰라서 그건 팔지 않았어. 돌이킬 수 없게 되기는 바라지 않았거든)."

롱맨 사전은 'burn your bridges/boats'를 "to do something with the result that you will not be able to return to a previous situation again, even if you want to(당신이 원한다 하더라도 이전 상황으로 다시는 돌아갈 수 없게 하는 결과를 내는 일을 하다)"라고 풀이했다.
