케임브릿지 사전은 'stanchion'을 "a fixed vertical bar or pole used as a support for something(어떤 것의 지지대로 사용되는, 고정된 수직 막대)"이라고 정의했다.

"If this stanchion is removed, the stairs will collapse(이 지지대가 제거되면, 계단이 붕괴할 것이다)."

"His 18-yard shot hit the stanchion (= goalpost) and went back into play(그의 18야드(약 16.45m)짜리 슛이 골대를 치고 그의 플레이로 돌아갔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'stanchion'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A stanchion is a pole or bar that stands upright and is used as a support( stanchion은 수직으로 서 있으며 지지대로 쓰이는 기둥이나 막대이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
