케임브릿지 사전은 'excise'를 "to remove something, especially by cutting(어떤 것을, 특히 잘라서, 제거하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"During a three-hour operation six tumours were excised from the wall of the patient's stomach(3시간이나 걸린 수술에서 환자의 위에서 종양을 여섯 개나 잘라 냈다)."

"The official censors have excised the controversial sections of the report(공식 검열관이 그 보고서에서 논란이 될 만한 부분들을 삭제했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'excise'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone excises something, they remove it deliberately and completely(어떤 것을 excise 한다면, 그것을 의도적으로, 완전히 제거하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
