케임브릿지 사전은 'pittance'를 "a very small amount of money, especially money received as payment, income, or a present(아주 적은 양의 돈, 특히 지불금, 수입, 또는 선물로 받은 돈)"라고 정의했다.

"He works hard but he's paid a pittance(그는 열심히 일하지만 쥐꼬리만 한 돈을 받는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pittance'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that you receive a pittance, you are emphasizing that you get only a very small amount of money, probably not as much as you think you deserve(pittance를 받는다면, 아마 당신이 받아 마땅하다고 생각하는 것만큼 많지 않은, 아주 적은 양의 돈만을 받는다는 사실을 강조하는 것이다)." 강조하는(emphasis) 표현이다.

"Her secretaries work tirelessly for a pittance(그녀의 비서는 적은 돈을 위해 지칠 줄 모르고 일한다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'pittance'를 "a very small amount of money that somebody receives, for example as a wage, and that is hardly enough to live on(어떤 사람이, 예를 들어 임금으로, 받는, 먹고살기에 빠듯한 적은 양의 돈)"이라고 풀이했다.

"to pay somebody a pittance(누구에게 쥐꼬리만 한 임금을 주다)"
