[영어 공부] flashpoint(일촉즉발의 상황, (비유적) 화약고)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'flashpoint'를 "a place or stage at which violence might be expected to begin(폭력이 시작될 것으로 예상되는 장소 도는 단계)"이라고 정의했다.

"Because of the army's presence, the city is seen to be the flashpoint of the area(군대의 존재 때문에, 그 도시는 그 지역의 화약고로 여겨진다)."

콜린스 사전은 'flashpoint'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A flashpoint is the moment at which a conflict, especially a political conflict, suddenly gets worse and becomes violent(flashpoint는 갈등, 특히 정치적 갈등이 갑작스럽게 악화되고 폭력적이 되는 순간이다)."

"The immediate flashpoint was Wednesday's big rally in the city centre(당면한 화약고는 수요일에 도심에서 열린 큰 집회였다)."

"There are still plenty of potential flashpoints in relations between the two countries(두 나라 사이에는 잠재적으로 일촉즉발의 상황으로 번질 수 있는 여지가 많다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'flashpoint'는 "a place where trouble or violence might easily develop suddenly and be hard to control(문제나 폭력이 쉽게 생겨서 통제하기 어렵게 될 수도 있는 장소)"이라고 풀이했다.
