케임브릿지 사전은 'skein'을 "a length of wool or thread collected together into the shape of a loose ring(느슨한 고리 모양으로 모은, 양털이나 실의 가닥)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'skein'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A skein is a length of thread, especially wool or silk, wound loosely round on itself(skein은 실, 특히 양털이나 실크의 실을 느슨하게, 둥글게 감은 가닥이다)."

"...a skein of wool(양털 한 타래)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'skein'을 "​a long piece of wool, thread or yarn that is loosely tied together(느슨하게 묶은, 양털, 실, 또는 뜨개실의 긴 부분)"라고 풀이했다.
