케임브릿지 사전은 'scourge'를 "something or someone that causes great suffering or a lot of trouble(큰 고통 또는 곤란을 야기하는 사물 또는 사람)"이라고 정의했다.

"the scourge of war/poverty/drugs(전쟁/가난/마약이라는 재앙)"
