케임브릿지 사전은 동사 'founder'를 "(especially of a boat) to fill with water and sink((특히 배가) 물이 차서 가라앉다)"라고 정의했다.

"The ferry foundered in a heavy storm, taking many of the passengers and crew with it(그 페리는 많은 탑승객과 선원들을 태운 채로, 심한 폭풍우에 좌초되었다)."

"The vessel drifted off course and foundered on the rocks off Cape Malea(그 배는 항로를 이탈하고 말리아 곶 근처의 암초에 좌초되었다)."
