케임브릿지 사전은 'microcosm'을 "a small place, society, or situation that has the same characteristics as something much larger(그보다 훨씬 더 큰 것과 같은 특징을 가진 작은 장소, 사회, 또는 상황)"라고 정의했다.

"The audience was selected to create a microcosm of American society(관객들은 미국 사회의 축소판을 탄생시키기 위해 선택되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'microcosm'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A microcosm is a small society, place, or activity which has all the typical features of a much larger one and so seems like a smaller version of it(microcosm은 그보다 더 큰 것의 전형적인 특색을 다 가지고, 그것의 작은 판인 것처럼 보이는, 작은 사회, 장소 또는 활동이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"Kitchell says the city was a microcosm of all American culture during the '60s(키첼은 그 도시가 60년대에 미국 문화의 축소판이었다고 말한다)." 

"In many respects, Mahan's story is that of the Asian community in microcosm(많은 면에서 마한의 이야기는 소우주 속 아시아인 공동체의 이야기이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'microcosm'을 "​a thing, a place or a group that has all the features and qualities of something much larger(그보다 훨씬 더 큰 것의 특색과 특징을 모두 가진 사물, 장소 또는 그룹)"라고 풀이했다.

"The family is a microcosm of society(가족은 사회의 축소판이다)."
