케임브릿지 사전은 'ignominy'를 "public embarrassment(대중적 수치)"라고 정의했다.

"The incumbent party experienced the ignominy of total defeat in the last election(재임 중인 당은 지난번 선거에서 완패라는 불명예를 겪었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ignominy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Ignominy is shame or public disgrace(ignominy는 수치나 대중적인 망신이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...the ignominy of being made redundant(...구조 조정의 대상이 되는 불명예)."

"If they were caught, she would be thrown out in disgrace, dismissed with ignominy(그들이 붙잡힌다면 그녀는 불명예 속에 무시당하고, 수치스럽게 쫓겨날 것이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'ignominy'를 "​public shame and loss of honour(대중적인 수치와 명예의 상실)"라고 풀이했다.

"They suffered the ignominy of defeat(그들은 패배의 불명예를 겪었다)."
