케임브릿지 사전은 'sop'을 "something of little importance or value that is offered to stop complaints or unhappiness(불만이나 불행을 막기 위해 제공되는, 별로 중요나 가치가 없는 것)"라고 정의했다.

"Critics see the increase in defence spending as a sop to the armed forces rather than an improvement of national security(비평가들은 국가 안보의 향상보다 군대를 달래기 위한 수단으로서의 방위비의 증가를 보고 있디)."

콜린스 사전은 'sop'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You describe something as a sop to a person when they are offered something small or unimportant in order to prevent them from getting angry or causing trouble(어떤 사람이 화가 나거나 분란을 일으키는 것을 예방하기 위해 작거나 중요하지 않은 것을 제공받을 때, 그것을 어떤 사람에게 주는 sop이라고 표현한다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

롱맨 사전은 'sop'을 "something not very important or valuable that a government or someone in authority offers to people to stop them from complaining or protesting – used to show disapproval(정부나 권위자가 사람들로 하여금 불만을 가지거나 항의하지 못하게 막기 위한 수단으로서 제공하는, 별로 중요하거나 가치 있지 않은 것 – 못마땅함을 보여 주기 위해 쓰이는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.
