[영어 공부] dowdy(볼품없는, 촌스러운)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'dowdy'를 "(especially of clothes or the person wearing them) not attractive or fashionable((특히 옷이나 그것을 입은 사람이) 매력적이거나 유행에 부합하지 않는)"이라고 정의했다.

"a dowdy skirt(촌스러운 치마)"

"She looked dowdy and plain(그녀는 촌스럽고 소박해 보였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'dowdy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone or their clothes as dowdy, you mean their clothes are dull and unfashionable(어떤 사람이나 그들의 옷을 dowdy라고 표현한다면, 그 옷이 단조롭지 유행에 어울리지 않는다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"She had a somewhat dowdy appearance(그녀는 외모가 다소 촌스러웠다)."

"...clothes which were clean but dowdy(...깨끗하지만 촌스러운 옷들)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'dowdy'를 "boring and not attractive or fashionable(지루하고 매력적이거나 유행하지 않는)"이라고 풀이했다.
